Overlapping with his presentation in Tate Modern's upcoming group show A World in Common, Ed Cross is pleased to present On Faith, a solo show of work by award-winning photographer Mário Macilau (b. 1984, Maputo, Mozambique) at the Garrett Street gallery from 15 June – 5 August 2023.

Showing photographs from Macilau’s ongoing Faith series as a discrete body of work in London for the first time, the images document the practice of animism (the belief that everything has a soul or spirit) within traditional religions in contemporary Mozambique. Featuring isolated communities increasingly imperilled by climate change, the work's documentary as well its aesthetic function is more important than ever.

One of the leading figures of a new generation of artists from Mozambique, Macilau was recently announced as the winner of the 31st edition of the prestigious Roger Pic Prize for his Faith series. His work is in the permanent collections of Quai Branly Museum and the Pompidou Centre as well as the Vatican Museum.
