Laetitzia Campbell will participate in the upcoming group exhibition 'A Stitch in Time' at Paul Smith Space, running from 19th to 31st March at 9 Albemarle Street London, W1S 4HH.
The exhibition will bring together emerging artists who use textile as their medium, specifically focussing on the possibilities of fibre art. The show highlights artists innovating through materiality and challenging fine art hierarchies; whilst many artists revisit traditional craft methods, others reinvent the possibilities of these traditions. Through sublimating textile practices, all of the artists are engaged in creating fine art objects, many exploring complex and timely social and identitarian themes.
Featured artists include Alice Kettle, Alice von Maltzahn, Ben Sanderson, Carolina Mazzolari, Cecilia Charlton, Heather Chontos, Jane Bustin, Kimathi Mafafo, Laetitzia Campbell, Ptolemy Mann, Shelly Goldsmith and Tiffanie Delune.
Laetitzia Campbell uses thread as a form of drawing; her work is intricate yet free-flowing, with loose threads, like sketch lines, forming part of compositions that hover between figuration and abstraction,. These images suggest complex networks of movement, thought, feelings, intuitions, the passage of time and connections. Her body of work often explores what she calls “second-hand memories”: emotions passed down through objects, stories, and gestures, and the quiet ways we try to hold onto them.
